If we hold that there is some beauty and wisdom in orienting our time around Jesus and the Spirit that issues forth from him into the Church, then we have come to a point in the year in which the gift of God's Self is poured out upon His people. It is Pentecost and it is a turning point in the history of the world.
The Church is lifeless, powerless, aimless, and purposeless without the Spirit of the Living God living within us. We may not always know what to do with the Spirit, how to think of the Spirit, or what it feels like to have the Spirit living in us, but the Holy Spirit of God is far too essential for us to use those as excuses for avoiding the Spirit.
So this week, we lean in to the Spirit instead, as the gift that enlivens the people of God.
Acts 2:1–21
Ezekiel 37:1–14
Romans 8:22–27
John 15:26–27; 16:4–15
My prayer for us: Holy Spirit, we thank You for Your life in us that connects us to You. Enliven us to all that You are about in this world and fill us with all the fullness we can stand. And when our words of longing, despair, and hope fail, groan for us. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
