When You Don't Know What To Say (2/11)

Joshua Gorenflo

We've been in a season in which Jesus has been revealing himself to the world, to his disciples, and to us. He's been affirmed as God's Son in His baptism. He's inaugurated the reign of God as King. He's taken the demonic powers to task. He's extended a compassionate touch that brings healing to all the broken parts of our lives.

And this week, we will get a glimpse of his glory at his Transfiguration. Just in time, too, because his disciples are confused and can't compute how all this talk of dying on a cross signifies anything but defeat. I mean, really, how can a dead messiah be a victorious king?

That makes this a word for us as well. We need to know that God reigns--and gloriously so--especially when life is full of strife and difficulty; especially when the world seems to be getting worse, not better; especially when the gods of our age try to tempt us away from such a "backward" belief as cross and resurrection. The Transfiguration draws us into hope, even as it leaves us speechless.

Here are the texts for this week. How does the Transfiguration account in Mark's Gospel attract all the other texts to it?

Mark 9:2–9

2 Kings 2:1–12

Psalm 50:1–6

2 Corinthians 4:3–6

My prayer for us: King Jesus, shine brightly in our darkness, so that it cannot overcome your magnificent light. Be glorified in your Church and in our lives as you draw us into your dazzling future, filled with hope. It is good that we are here with you, even though we don't always know what to say. In your name, Amen.
