They Said Nothing to Anyone (3/31)

Joshua Gorenflo

This week, our attention is going to turn to the good news of the resurrected Lord on that beautiful Sunday morning. A new day has dawned. A new life has come. Everything is bright and beautiful.

Except, that's not really how Mark tells the story. The most reliable versions of Mark's Gospel end with verse 8: "So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid."

Wait, what? No announcement of joy? No "He is risen, indeed!"? Nope. Not in Mark.

Mark invites us to enter into the story, to experience the fear and amazement for ourselves, to let the new reality overwhelm us to the point of speechlessness. We'll find our voices, just like the disciples did. But in this moment...

  • Isaiah 25:6–9

  • Psalm 118:1–2, 14–24

  • 1 Corinthians 15:1–11

  • Mark 16:1–8

My prayer for us: God of glory, wisdom, and power--You amaze us. What You have done in giving Yourself to death for our sake and rising to new life so that we might also have new life with You is frankly too overwhelmingly astonishing for us to comprehend. Captivate us with the startling news that "he is not here" as we go throughout this week. In the name of the Risen One I pray. Amen.
