Ancient & New Beginnings (12/10)

We are now situated in a season of anticipation for the coming of Jesus. "Life is Advent," we heard from Henri Nouwen, "life is recognizing the coming of the Lord." As you look around this week and wonder "where is God?," may you find Him in the most surprising and wonderful places.

And as we head into the Second Sunday of Advent, we hear a voice crying out in the desert: "Prepare the way for the Lord!" It's the voice of John the Baptist, whose life points to "one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie." And as he does so, we find ourselves challenged to do the same.

Challenged to lay aside our own pride, our own preoccupation with ourselves, our own sense of "lordship" over our lives, in favor of recognizing the humble King. So let's gather our hearts around these texts in the coming week as we dwell on the character and purpose of John.

Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13

Isaiah 40:1-11

2 Peter 3:8-15

Mark 1:1-8

My prayer for us: Gracious Lord, prepare the way for us to receive You in all the ways You desire to enter into our lives. Make the way straight by Your Word and Your Spirit, so that we might know You fully, now and forever. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
