How To Save A Life (2/25)

Joshua Gorenflo

We are pretty comfortable with talking about Jesus as our Savior. Our common confession is that Jesus died on the cross and was buried and was raised to new life, all so that we might be saved.

But how does that salvation actually play out in our day to day life? What does it mean to receive the gift that Jesus offers? First, we must believe that Jesus is who he says he is. And second, we must follow after him: becoming his students, speaking and acting and living as we see him do. However, Jesus is pretty blunt with us about what "salvation" looks like as we follow him.

"For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it."

Saving looks like losing. Losing looks like saving. How are we losing our lives this week for the sake of Jesus and the good news he offers? Let's ponder that together as we center our hearts on these texts.

Mark 8:31–38

Psalm 22:22–30

Genesis 17:1–7, 15–16

Romans 4:13–25

My prayer for us: Good Father, help us to receive the fullness of Your salvation by the way we give our lives away for Your sake and for the sake of Your good news. When this road is tough, give us courage. When this road is uncomfortable, give us the comfort of Your presence and Your promises. I pray in Jesus' name and in the power of Your Spirit. Amen.
