Extending Hospitality to Strangers

[hospitality: the practice of welcoming strangers, visitors, or guests into our lives with kindness and generosity]

Theme: Extending hospitality to strangers.

Challenge: Take notice of the people you are around when you are living your daily life. Commit to helping someone if you notice them struggling or in need. Make eye contact with those who serve you, and tell them that you appreciate what they do. Be open to other opportunities God may provide to bless someone He puts in your path.

Daily Prayer: One way God creates a hospitable spirit within us is through prayer. Throughout the month of April, let us together bring before God these specific prayers for people we don’t yet know.

  • Sunday: Pray for and over an establishment where you like to go eat. If you go out to eat, be intentional in showing kindness to the people serving you.

  • Monday: Pray blessing on the people that pass by your house while driving or walking. If you go for a walk, pray for those you encounter or pass along the way.

  • Tuesday: Speak a word of blessing to the cashier, the drive-thru coffee server, or the helper at the shop you go to.

  • Wednesday: Notice if someone today is struggling with anything they are doing. Pray encouragement over them and if at all possible for you, offer to help them.

  • Thursday: Notice one stranger today and pray that they might hear and know the Good News of Jesus, who died for their sins and was raised to life so they might have life.

  • Friday: Pray a blessing on anyone who came from other countries to the U.S. Pray for those who came as strangers, that they might find their place in society, might be welcomed with warmth, and might get to know Christ.

  • Saturday: Pray for anyone who might feel as a stranger in their family, school, social context, or in society, that they might encounter a friendly face today, that they might find a welcoming home in God’s family.
